Marisa Capponi, a Napa mother of two and breast cancer survivor, is the 1,000th individual to participate in Queen of the Valley Medical Center’s Cancer Wellness Program. The free program complements cancer therapy by strengthening the mind, body and soul.
Last year, Capponi was diagnosed with stage 0 breast cancer, ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS). Fortunately, the cancer was caught early and the atypical cells had not spread outside of the ducts or lobules into the surrounding breast tissue.
Capponi met with Elizabeth Cunningham, MD, F.A.C.S. a board-certified general surgeon and fellowship-trained surgical oncologist who specializes in breast surgery. Dr. Cunningham performed a Hidden Scar™ lumpectomy at Queen of the Valley Medical Center to remove the tumor. This is an advanced approach that can be used for breast cancer surgery, including lumpectomy and mastectomy. The Hidden Scar approach hides scars, minimizing the daily emotional reminder of a breast cancer diagnosis and optimizing cosmetic results.
“I was fortunate that the cancer was caught so early, and because of that, at first, I didn’t think I needed to participate in the Cancer Wellness Program,” said Capponi. “But, I kept hearing positive feedback about the program, and I think taking a holistic approach to your health is really important, so I signed up!”
Participants of the program receive a three-month membership to Synergy Medical Fitness Center; appointment with a physical therapist to develop a personalized exercise program; nutritional counseling session with a registered dietitian; individual counseling session with a licensed therapist and/or meditative wellness coach; individual Rosen Method/Comfort Touch sessions and more.
Capponi started the program last month and is feeling great. On March 31, she will be one of 38 models participating in the 25th annual Reach for the Stars, The Queen’s Celebration. The funds raised at the annual fashion show and luncheon are used to fully fund the Cancer Wellness Program as well as other services and programs for individuals with a cancer diagnosis.
