PSJH Collaborative Learning and Improvement Community: Queen of the Valley was recognized as the Top Performer in Sepsis Mortality

Queen of the Valley Medical Center’s (QVMC) Acute Care Nurse Practitioner-led (ACNP) Sepsis Program was presented at the PSJH Sepsis Collaborative on March 22 – 23 in Renton, WA.  Maureen Disbot, NorCal Regional VP of Quality and Patient Safety, and Ann C. Eells, Regional Quality and Patient Safety Nurse Specialist at QVMC presented on behalf of the QVMC Sepsis Team.

QVMC is the only ministry in the PSJH utilizing the ACNP-led Sepsis model and has seen dramatic results since its roll-out in March 2017. Queen of the Valley outperformed all 50 hospitals as Top Performer in Sepsis Mortality.

ACNP Jennifer Rofkahr, Amy Samolis and Shelley Tantau, led by Bradley Schroeder, MD, Sepsis Champion, have been collaborating with nurses and physicians to identify and treat expeditiously patients with suspected or known sepsis utilizing Best Practice methodology. The ACNPs additionally round on patients with Sepsis and lead the Rapid Response Team (RRT) when called to bedside for patients experiencing a deterioration in condition.

The PSJH Sepsis Collaborative is a learning and improvement community that comes together every six months to share rapid improvement projects and outcomes taking place in each ministry based on Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI) methodology.

The objective of the learning and improvement community is to reduce variation in the quality of care across all PSJH facilities through the following actions:

  • Facilitate learning through collaborative networks (all teach, all learn)
  • Develop standard resources and tools that are needed enterprise-wide
  • Build local improvement capacity.
