As we near the end of our Lenten journey and spring into the season of rebirth and renewal, I’m reminded of what this season has called us to do. For a 40-day period we have used this time to contemplate, abstain and reflect on how we’ve dedicated our existence to provide care to others, especially the poor and vulnerable. The season of Lent begins with ashes and ends by being born into something altogether new—Easter—with the resurrection of Jesus.
Later this week our Jewish colleagues will begin the season of Passover, commemorating a transition from slavery to freedom in the promised land. Upon embarking on their Exodus from Egypt, the Israelites entered a new period of hope and spiritual rebirth. They entrusted their entire existence into the hands of God.
Across Providence St. Joseph Health, we too are experiencing this season of rebirth and renewal. Earlier this month we unveiled our new statements of Mission and values, along with a vision and promise statement. These words will guide us as PSJH leads the future of health care by inspiring and guiding the 115,000 caregivers at PSJH every day. And though our Mission itself hasn’t changed, we have breathed new life into those beautiful statements that have sustained our combined Missions and heritages for more than 160 years.
As the seasons of Lent, Easter and Passover converge during this Holy Week, please take some time to reflect on these lovely new words. It’s inspiring knowing that each of these phrases together and separately not only represent and guide us in our calling to health care, but they could easily represent what the seasons of Lent, Passover and Easter are all about.
The Mission: As expressions of God’s healing love, witnessed through the ministry of Jesus, we are steadfast in serving all, especially those who are poor and vulnerable.
Like Jesus remained steadfast to serving those around him during his brief time in this mortal life, we as an organization remain fully-committed to helping each other and the individuals who come to us in times of need.
Values: Compassion, Dignity, Justice, Excellence, Integrity
Let us use each of these words as an inspiration on how to carry out our daily work and interactions with each other. Let them renew our spirits and guide us on our journey forward.
Vision: Health for a Better World
At the center of this vision is the acknowledgement that health is integral to living a full life and the importance health has on every person, every community and every nation. Let us renew our patients’ and caregivers’ spirits and personal well-being during this season.
Our Promise “Know me, care for me, ease my way.”
Similar to God’s promise to bring the Isrealites into freedom, this is our promise to our patients, communities and you to ease your way by knowing your needs and caring for you, our caregivers.
Wishing you and your family a blessed springtime as we celebrate these two holy seasons of rebirth, renewal and hope.
