Erik G. Wexler, Regional Chief Executive, Southern California Region

Dear Southern California region caregivers,

This week we officially introduce our Mission, values, vision and promise statement for Providence St. Joseph Health. These new statements form the foundation for who we are and what we are called to do. They inspire us, unify our ministries, and provide guidance for our day-to-day interactions with patients, families, the community and each other. While we are using new words to express the statements, the Mission and values remain deeply rooted in the spirit and heritage of our foundresses, the Sisters of Providence and the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange.

The process for developing the new statements was meaningful and deliberate. More than 60,000 caregivers, providers, leaders, board members, sponsors and volunteers throughout Providence St. Joseph Health provided feedback on what is most valuable and inspiring to them about who we are and what we do. They shared what the Mission means to them and discussed the important elements of our culture. This valuable input helped shape the statements that we share with you this week.

As I reflect on the new Mission and values, I am very humbled. Our Mission states that we are expressions of God’s healing love, witnessed through the ministry of Jesus. This is a powerful calling to serve others in the spirit of our founding Sisters. As I did my own research on the healing ministry of Jesus, I learned that it is centered on healing the sick, helping people achieve better lives and being there for those in need. Our ministries have been dedicated to this important work since being founded. Today, our commitment to Mission remains strong as evidenced by our regional integration efforts. We are dedicated to ensuring that our community experiences increased access; improved outcomes; and compassionate, safe and efficient care across our expanded network.

Our integration work is also guided by our values. You may have noticed that we added new values and retired a few long-standing ones. This does not mean we will stop focusing on the ideals of past values. For example, the legacy Providence value of Stewardship has been retired because Stewardship is included in our value of Excellence, which represents all that we are called to accomplish. Legacy St. Joseph Health caregivers will notice that the value of Service has been retired because service encompasses everything that we do. We are called to serve! We have also added a new value: Integrity.  Integrity holds us to the highest standard of ethical behavior. Adding this value highlights our desire to do the right thing for the right reasons.

I encourage you to take time to reflect on our new statements. The Mission and values are central to who we are and how we provide care in an increasingly uncertain world – regardless of coverage or ability to pay. The vision sets the course for our aspirations and unites and attracts the like-minded. Our promise keeps us focused and reminds us what matters most.

This is an historic time for our organization! I would like to personally thank all our Mission Integration leaders, especially Rosie Perez, senior vice president, Mission Integration, and Sister Nancy Jurecki, OP, chief mission officer. Their thoughtful leadership in guiding our organization through formation activities will give each of us a deeper meaning of what it means to serve others in our unified ministry.

To learn more about our new statements and promulgation ceremonies being held throughout the Southern California Region, I invite you to watch this week’s caregiver webinar. My special guest is Rosie Perez. Rosie will speak about our new statements, what they mean to her and how each of us play an important role in carrying out the Mission of our founding Sisters.
